The Road Runner

Road running is one of the world’s most popular forms of exercise. However, up to 50% of all runners will sustain an injury which will affect their running performance and/or their ability to train. The repetitive forces associated with long distance running can be up to 8 times the bodyweight of the runner itself. With these increased forces comes increased risk of injury.

The four most common injuries in endurance runners are anterior knee pain, iliotibial-band syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis.

At Physio Tullamore we combine our extensive knowledge of clinical based treatment techniques with the latest up to date rehabilitation protocols.

Prehabilitation + Rehabilitation:

Knee pain is one of the most common area for injury in runners. This id due to the large forces placed on the knee with ground contact.

The position of your pelvis and trunk has a huge impact on the direction of force placed on the knee.

Therefore at Phyiso Tullamore we take significant care in promoting correct landing mechanics. We strongly believe in training the body to move with optimal strategy and eliminate poor movement patterns.

In order to achieve proper landing mechanics it is vital to focus on trunk and pelvis stability. At Physio Tullamore we prescribe scientifically proven stability exercises in a variety of planes of movement to protect the integrity of the athlete’s joints.

Another key area which Physio Tullamore focuses on is Calf strengthening. The musculotendinous unit of the calf (gastrocnemius-soleus) and Achilles tendon are responsible for shock absorption and force generation. If this unit is not strong enough to deal with the large forces placed on it during running there is a large chance that an overuse injury such as Achilles tendinopathy may occur.

Clinical Treatment:

At Physio Tullamore we have a new unique and scientifically proven method to aid the recovery from these chronic overuse injuries, a treatment known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT). Due to the growing evidence supporting this treatment Physio Tullamore is now offering this latest cutting edge treatment.

This cutting edge treatment delivers targeted shock waves to the painful area using a handheld ‘gun’ that causes a re-healing response at the damaged tissue. The shock isn’t an electric shock, it is a physical blow.

The therapy has been proven to be successful against debilitating pain and aches associated with anterior knee pain, iliotibial-band syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis.

ESWT’s capacity to deliver shock waves at different frequencies allows our specialist clinicians to use the therapy to cure the problem at various stages

As the tissue regenerates Physio Tullamore prescribes up to date scientifically proven rehabilitation protocols tailored to the individual’s needs to aid full recovery from their injury.

The treatment is usually conducted over 3-6 sessions at weekly intervals. The cost of the sessions is 70 Euro
